Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science are two programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education, that serve to increase the rate at which high school graduates pursue post secondary education. Both programs provide high school students with academic enrichment during the regular school-year and a six week program during the summer.
Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science are 2 out the 8 TRIO programs. Upward Bound emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the administration's War on Poverty. Later in 1990 Upward Bound Math-Science was created to serve the need for specific instruction in the fields of math and science.
Upward Bound was established at Los Angeles Valley College, located in Valley Glen, in 2007. Later in 2012, Upward Bound Math-Science was established at LAVC. Upward Bound serves Ulysses S. Grant High School and Van Nuys High School. And Upward Bound Math-Science serves Ulysses S. Grant High School and Robert Fulton College Prep High School.
